How do you Build a List in Pardot?

If you’re already using Pardot, you understand just how important it is to be able to create segmented lists within the system. It’s quite a simple task but has a huge return on your marketing and sales efforts.

But with list building seemingly being a simple task, you wouldn't think it could get so complicated!

We get it…

There are multiple options to choose from when building a list, that it can be confusing, and quite honestly a little intimidating when trying to create a new list that best supports your marketing and sales goals.

So, we’ve created two videos on how to build and populate lists within Pardot. But before we dive in, let's have a refresher on WHY list building, creation, ad segmentation, are so important:

Why is list building important?

  • List building creates and nurtures current and potential customers

  • When someone is on your list, it means the customer or potential customer trusts you to have their information, opening the door for communication

  • Email marketing is an ever-lasting form of marketing that has surpassed through years or marketing trends, and won’t be going away any time soon

Why are segmented lists important?

  • With segmented lists, you are able to create highly targeted campaigns that resonate with the receiver, since there is no one size fits all to marketing or relationship building

  • Concert more customers with higher quality, highly targeted campaigns

  • Impacts sender reputation

  • Keep your contacts and business better organized and up to date

Creating a thorough and segmented list is the most important step in list building and email marketing. Some may argue even more important than the content that is sent out. So, let’s dive in!

How to create lists in Pardot:

Firstly, while already in Pardot, you want to...

  1. Jump over to the Marketing tab

  2. Click on segmentations

  3. Click on Lists

From the List view, you are now able to create new lists.

To create a new list, you’ll want to follow these steps:

To create a new list in Pardot:

1: Click on Add List

2: Name your list

3: Put your list in the desired folder and add any tags if necessary

4: Choose the type of list you want to create. Here, you’ll have a few options:

Email Test List

An Email Test List is used for sending out test templates and campaigns to a selected group of internal contacts. You use this list when sending out email drafts to your team for approval or testing.

Dynamic List

When building a Dynamic List, you cannot manually add new contacts to this list, the system does it for you! To create a Dynamic List, you will select a set of criteria for the system to follow and automatically add and upkeep for you, saving you much time and effort!

For example, you can create a list of active accounts that live in Florida. You simply input that criteria into the system and a list of those contacts who follow those criteria will be populated for you. New contacts who also follow these criteria will be continuously updated as well.

Public List

The Public Facing List is shown on your Email Preference Center within Pardot.

CRM Visible List

The CRM Visible List is open for sales reps to see and edit. New contacts are able to be added to this list manually.

In our next video and blog, we will dive in deeper on how to actually populate these new lists you've created. Until then, follow this link to a free course that dives in much deeper about all the different complexities of Pardot and helps you piece it all together!
